The Indian government is trying hard to reduce the open defecation. Many harmful diseases are grouped together in the category of Waterborne disease. Open defecation is an unhealthy activity that causes various diseases, like intestinal worm infection, Diarrhea, Thyroid, Polio, Trachoma and much more. In 2011, Many children lost their lives because of infectious diarrhea.
In the past year, the Indian government has built more than 5.8 million toilets that are up from 4.9 million the previous year.
In 2015, 14 companies including Tata Consulting Services(TCS), Mahindra Group and Rotary International have said to construct 3,195 new toilets. As of the same month, 71 public sectors in India supported the construction of 86,781 new toilets.
After building so many toilets in India a report says many of them have gone unused. The report clears a fact that Building Toilets is important but getting people to use them is a real challenge now.
The Indian government is now taking strict action against people who are not using toilets after having it around. The government is also trying to shame people to use them. A new aggressive campaign is shaming people who defecate in the open especially the rural part of India. Television commercials and billboards on road carry a message that hits at the heart of Indians of being a part of world fastest growing economy and also defecating in the open is normal in the rural part of the nation.
The Indian government campaign Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has been a success till now. Hope the government achieves the aim of Clean India by 2019.
